Immunity for Christians An interesting sidelight on the recent rioting in Calcutta, when more than 4000 were killed,. is given by Miss M. Bradfield, who recently returned to New Zealand from India. She says that Indian Christians painted a big cross on their doors and even in the most disturbed centres not one Christian home was attacked by either Mohammedan or Hindu. Dominion Record Frost Details of last week's heavy frosts in Otago made available by the Meteorological Office show that the lowest reading was at Ranfurly, where 30 degrees of frost were reported, not, however, from an officially placed instrument. At Alexandra, 18 1 degrees were officially recorded!* The record low for New Zealahd is 4'i" degrees at Tekapo in ' July, 1938. Gatekeepers' Wages Gatekeepers -at rugby games in the Horowhenua district are to receive a small increase in the amount paid to them for their services. At a meeting of the management committee of the Horowhenua Rugby Union this week it was decided that in future gatekeepers be paid 10s nett for attendance at a field where two games . are played in succession and 7s nett for one game or where two are : played at the same time. Inquiry for Girl Unavailing inquiries have been made by the* police for Marie Emily West, aged 17i, of Mclntyre Avenue, Wellington, who after leaving her home Monday night, failed to. keep an appointment and has not been seen by her family or friends since. At 7.30 p.m. Monday she left her home to meet a friend at Courtenay Place only a few blocks away. They were to have met and gone to a club. When Miss West failed to arrive her : friend, after waiting for some | time, assumed , she was unable to : come and went home.
■ Himatangi Beach Road j The Himatangi Beach Improve- ■ ment Committee wrote to yester- \ day's meeting of the Manawatu ; County Council regarding the tar- ! sealing of the beach road and ipointing out that the Automobile Association supported the claim for sealing, while it was understood that the road was included in the Main Highways Board's 10-year plan. The committee wished to know when the road would be declared a majn or State highway and when the jcommittee eould expect the work to be proceeded with. The clerk was instructed to advise the committee that it would be seven years at the least before anything was dome even if the highway was declared a main . one and the loan carried for its sealing. _________
