NEW RATES OF PAY FOR CARPENTERS

YvrELLINGTOJN; July 9. The wage rate for JSfew Zealand carpenters and joiners has been increased oy lAd an hour, nialung- the minimum uage 3s 2d houriy plus the cost oi iiving bonuses. This is set out in the ' new New Zealand (except Otago and bouthland) carjjenters' and joiners' avvard issued by the Oourt of Arbitration. It applies in all essentialg to carpenters and .joiners employed throughout the DomiUion. A worker who is responsible for carrying -out work and who gives instructions to other wbrkers, shall be paid 2s 3d a day in addition to the above rates. Any work done in excess of four hours o'n Saturdays or after noon on. that day, shall be paid for at double time. Wliere, owing to bad weather, work does not proceed ai the beginning of a day, workers attending shall be paid for two hours. If the work proeeeds at "the beginning of the day and is interrupted by bad weather, workers shall be paid to noon but they may be transf'erred to a dry job or mav be required to stand by till noon. If work proeeeds after the lunch period and is interrupted by bad weather, workers shall..be paid for tne rest of the afternoon but they may De transferred to a dry job or may be required to stand by. No worker is eligible for the above payment if he f'ails to transfer or stand by when so required. On being discharged a worker shall be entitled to four hours' notice. When leaving for any reason other than illness, he shall give his employer or foreman in charge four hours' notice. In either ease a worker shall be entitled to spend two hours in putting his tools in order. Morning and afternoOn tea breaks of ten minutes shall be allowed all workers without reduction of pay. Where workers are called upon to work in water, slush, mud or wet concrete one inch or more in depth, employers shall provide them with proper gumboots or shall pay them 4d houriy extra. An application tby the Wanganui Education Board to be struck out as a party to the award was declined. The suburban work clause is praetieally the same as in the old award.
