ATTLEY GUARDED BY POLICE BEFORE DOOMBEN

No risks were taken of Attley, favourite for last Saturday 's Doomben £10,000, being "nobbled" before the race, as was Beaulivre before he ran in the big event some years ago (states the Star). Mr. Norman Sharpe, husband of the owner, arranged with the head of the poliee department in Brisbane for a 24hours guard over Attley by plainelothes men. The guard eontinued until after the race was run, and the poliee accompanied the horse to the raceeotirse and kept onlookers awav from him. Last year Mr. A. 0. Romano adopted the same plan with Bernborough, and the horse arrived at Doomben for the big race flanked by a bodyguard oi C.I.B. men. Although Attley was, for a favourite, at a comparativelv long price for the Ten Tliousand, his success would have taken a lot of money out of the ring — • at least £50,000. Although Attley is an aeeeptor for the Doomben Cup next Saturday, there is no certainty that he will run in that race. Mr. Norman Sharpe said that his present plans were to.send Attley back to Melbourne and rest him for about six weeks before having him prepared for the shorter distance weight-for-age races at the spring carnival in Melbourne. If Attley wins weight-for-age races in the spring, it is on the cards that he will go to America for some of the bigger races run on the Pacific , Coast earlv in the New Year. His value as a stallion in America would be considerably higher than in Australia.
