ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING OF BAND SUPPORTERS An enthusiastic and representative meeting of supporters of the Levin Municipal Band was held last night to make thq preliminary arrangements for the annual street and shop day, , The chairman of the citizens' committee, Mr, H- H- Burdekin, presided and said that this year dne of the factors to be taken into consideration Was that the R.S.A. would be conducting' a queen carniyai during the months of September and October. With thi§ opppsition, members would have to work very hard. The citizens' committee had applied to the borough council for a date to be allocated to it in October." in putting forward pctober 24 a? the date on behalf of the citizens' committee, Mr. Burdekin said that it would be the day prior to thje Labour weekend band contest in Palmerston North, and at which fhe band would be competing. After a discussion on the prpposed date it was decided, on the motipn of Mr. G. Hesp, seconded by Mr. R. Hatch, that B-Day be October 24. It was also decided that the after church concert be held in the Regent Theatre on Sunday, October 19, and that no charge for admission be made, on the motion of Mr. L. Trass seconded by Mr. E. Lacey. At this concert the band will play its contest pieces and the assistance of other artists will be obtained to make it a first class entertainment. It was also decided that the assistance of the Horowhenua Marching Association would be sought in helping to stage a display on the Levin Park Domain on a Sunday afternoon prior to the contest, when the band would perform its contest quicksteD.
It was unariimously decided, on the motion of Mr. C. Church, seconded. by Mr. W. A. Strode-Penny, that the ladies present fohn them- . selves into a committee with Mrs. Burdekin as convener, with power to add, this being carried with acclamation. It was also decided that all transport arrangements be left in the hands of Mr. C. Church and Mr. M. Kehoe. In formally thanking the large number who had attended the meeting, Mr. Burdekin said that it was pleasing to see all who had [ been nominated for the different tasks accepting them; and although last year's appeal had been a record, he was sure that with the same -co-operation and hard work it would again be possible to make a creditable showing. The citizens' committee had that night authorised the band to purch.ase an expensive instrument, which was necessary to keep the band up to standard, and he was sure that the bandsmen all realised the wonderfuj help the committee was giving them to provide the necessary funds to make these purchases possible, concluded Mr. Burdekin. Numerous apologies for unavoidable absence were received, all of them pledging their support.
