LOCAL AND GENERAL

Personal Mr. and Mrs. G. Rix, of Kaihinau Road, have returned from a holiday spent in the Hawke's Bay district. While visiting Shannon, and Tokomaru, Rev. Robert F. Ghisholm, secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society (N.Z.), was the guest of Mrs. T. Christensen, Vance Street. 500 Tournament There was a very good attendance of players present in the Parish Hall on Thursday evening, when a 500 card tournament was piayed between Shannon and Mangaore. A most enjoyable evening was spent, and after a very close coniest Shannon proved the wmners by 58 games io 54. Football Club Dance The Shannon Football Club held the second of a series of dances, arranged by its social committee, in the Druids' Hall on Thursday. The fun'ction was an outstanaing social success, ahhough the attendance was not all that could be desired, this being caused by other attractions in the district. There were a number of novelty. attractions, and dancing was enjoyed until . an early hour to the music provided by Tommy Hartley's orchestra. The supper arrangements were in the capable hands of the social committee and a band of willing workers. Landmark Disappearw One of Shannon's oid landmarks, the tall trees at the rear of the post office, have disappeared during the last few days. As the trees were shading the sun from the post office grounds, it v/as decided to have them cut down and a band of busy workers spent two days in the process. In one case extreme care had to be taken as a tree was very near to the power lines. However, the job of felling them is now completed, and every now and again the townspeople receive a nervous shock as the report of a log splitting gun breaks the quietness of the town.
