TO STUDY ART AT FRENCH SCHOOLS
WELLINGTON, July 4. Mr. Sam Cairneross, formerly a street photographer and now employed,as a porter at the Wellington Hofjpital, expeets to leave shortly for France where he will undertake a year's study in the art sehools of Paris. This is made possihle by an, award to New Zealand for the first time this year, of two bursaries by the French Government. The other bursar will be a secondary school teacher of French. Nominat-ions were forwarded to France earlier this year by the French. Minister to New Zealand, M. Armand ' Gazel, who is awaiting formal confirmation of them from his Government. As an artist, Mr. Cairneross has established a reputation for his exuberant use of colour. He is not an aeademie painter but his work greatly impressed Madame Gazel who commissioned him to do a portfait of her son Joel now studying in an American university.
