SEAS AS BIG AS HOUSES
AUCKLAND, July :i. Eneountering a northeasterly gaie wlien about 50 miles to the north ot Moko Hinau Island at the entrance to Hauraki Gulf, the Government auxiiiary ketch Kanui returned to Auckland early todav. The Ranui was earrying eonsignment of 20 sheep as a fresh meat supply for public works employees in the Ivermadees, and her master, Captain N. L. Wortli, decided to return to port when it was clear the sheep were suffering from exposure. Some of the sheep died during the 12-hour, voyage to Auckland and others were in a poor state when discharged. The sheep were housed in a pen on tlie starboard side on the deck and were exposed to the colcl and wet spray. An occasional sea swept the Ranui during the storm but it was stated that she could easily have ridden out the weather. However, the condition of the sheep made her return cssential. Additious were made to the pens aboard the Ranui today to provide more protection and a better foothold for the sheep and departure for tne Kermadees has been delayed until a further eonsignment of sheep has been obtained. "The seas were as big as liouses, " stated an offieer of the Govexnmem, motor vessel Maui Pomare, describmg the weather off the coast, after the ship arrived in port from the Cook Islands. As the vessel approached the Dominion she experienced the full brunt of tlie gale. Verv heavy rain completely restricted. visibility and the Maui Pomare was forced to grope her way to the entrance of Hauraki Gulf.
