TRACK HEAYY AT TRENTHAM- WEATHER F1NE Review Of Tomorrows Fields
(SPECIAL— FROM
WELLINGTON, This Day. The outlook is not promising for tomorrow when t-he' Wellington Racing Club will open its three-day winter meeting at Trentham. Typical July weather is being experienced , here. Af'ter a few fine days'since the severe weekend storm, rain feli on Wednesday night and early yesterday morning, but cleared later in the day. This morning has broken fine and a sunny day is assured. Prospects are that fine conditions will prevail tomorrow, but the track will be heavy. Ruling favourites for the main three events are: Stewards' Handieap, Lorna Leigh and Theocritus; Wellington Steeplechase: Bright Fox and Abdicate; Whyte Handieap: Howe, Pensacola.
Review of Fields 11.0. — Mariri Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, of £700; about two miles and a-half: Lunaria, 11.0; Royal v Writ, 10.12; La'noipa, 10.10; Runaway, 10.7; Ellerton Hall, 10.6; Royal Scholar, 10.0; Ruling- Moment, 9.13; Sphere, 9.12; Master Peter, Master Play, 9.4; Awaroa Stream, 9.3; Light Tea, Solo Park, Plato Boy, Miss Cynthia, 9.0. Two southerners, Runaway and Royal Writ will come in for solid support in the Mariri Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase. Both are well forward for their Trentham engagements and should collect some stake money at the meeting. Two others from the south not without prospects are Ruling Moment and Master Play. This will be Ruling Moment's first attempt over cross-country! He is to be ridden by R. Hawes. Best prospects among the northerners are Lanoma and Ellerton Hall. The mishap to Ellerton Hall at Hastings last week can be disregarded — he slipped at the take off to the jump. Ellerton Hall will be seen to much better advantage at Trentham. The winner is more than likely concealed in the abovementioned horses. 11.42. — Woburn Hack Handieap, of £600; seven furlongs: Relampago, Gay John, 9.1; Tommy Gun, 9.0; Neville, 8.11; Ella Shields, 8.8; Gynee Lou, Gay Stock, 8.6; Precipitate, 8.5; Abby Dt-.xe, 8.4; Moreton Bay, Find Out, 8.3; Revivre, Morotai, 8.2; Lord Victor, 8.1; Royal Baron, Ratatu, Bobby Dazzler, 8.0. Good winter hack form is represented in the Woburn Handieap by Relampago, Gay John, Neville, Ella Shields, Gynee Lou and Precipitate. Now that Relampago has struck top form he should be worth following while the tracks are soft. The same also applies to Neville and Ella Shields. It is regarded down here that Partici- . pate. will not be long in reaching the winning list, and it is expected success will come at Trentham. 12.25. — Vittoria Hack Hurdles, of £700; one mile and three-quarters: Batal, 1,0.8; Ruling Moment, 10.7; Desert Rek, 10.6; Hippodrome, 10.4; Pedantic, 10.3; Vassilikos, 10.1; Master Ring, 9.13; Paganini, 9.12; Cramond Bay, 9.9; Foxland, 9.5; Mine Host, Roman Duke, 9.2; Corineus, 9.1; Selected, Ally Sloper, 9.0. Desert Trek should predominate the betting in the Vittoria Hack Hurdles. This hurdler is very well at present and should reach the winning list at the meeting. If reserved for this event Ruling Moment will carry good support. He is a proficient hurdler but the distance will be quite far enough for him. The northerner Batal will make the contest interesting, as he has been schooling magnificently of late. Vassilikos is an improving hurdler as also is Paganini and Corineus. Master Ring is well and might effect a surprise. 1.10. — Stewards' Handieap, of £1000; six furlongs: Neenah, 10.5; Stony Broke, 10.1; Chung Chon^, 10.0; Lord Theio, 9.13; St. Nattar, 9.9; Tiger Tan, 9.8; Royal Heir, 9.7; Theocritus, 9.6; Tremello, 9.5; Master Ted, 9.4; Frances, 9.2; Malanui, 9.0; Dymondy, 8.13; Lorna Leigh, 8.10; Grand Tourist, Prince Revel, 8.8; Gay Corrie, 8.7; Playtos, 8.6; Lady Delight, 8.4; Ghazipur, Wild Note, 8.2; Panope, Brockie, 8.1; Zealanda, Foxella, Lyn Vaals, Gold Watch, Blue Tie, Peter Theio, 8.0. The Stewards' Handieap is the first of the two problem races on the programme. Form is well represented in the race with such good sprinters as Neenah, Stony Broke, Tiger Tan, Tremello, Lorna Leigh, Prince Revel, Theocritus, Playtos and Lady Delight. At Trentham yesterday Stony Broke revelled in the conditions stretching out well in his work. Tiger Tan was another to show up. Lorna Leigh has a strong following and is likely to be one of the favourites. Theocritus is coming into favour and is a good prospect. Judged by the manner in which he won at Hastings on Saturday Playtos is not without exceptionally good prospects. The race is very open and a big surprise may be in store. ' • 1.55. — Wellington Steeplechase, of £3000; about three miles and aquarter: Abdicate, Bright Fox, 10.10; Town Survey, 10.8; Red Glare, 10.7; Surpeen', 10.3; Arabian Night, 10.2; Northfield, 9.13; Gay Rouen, 9.11; Representative, 9.9; Good Armour, 9.8; Roman Ned, 9.3; Cuisinier, 9.0. As a result of his good trials over country at Trentham Bright Fox • is now co-favourite with Abdicate for the Wellington Steeplechase. This ehaser from ( - •
the north is in the pink of condition giving the. appearance of having gone through a thorough preparation before, reaching Trentham. Abdicate also looks the part. He is rapidly developing into one of the Dominion's best crosscou'ntry horses. Town Survey gives every indication of being fit and well and a return to his best effort over the country would give him a good chance. He will be bracketed with Representative. With A. Midwood in the saddle Northfield will not want for horsemanship. He is very well and has improved with the outing he had at Hastings. Northfield is regarded as a gbod prospect in some quarters. Gay Rouen enhanced his prospects by a clear-cut win in last Saturday's cross-country event at Hastings. 2.41. — Trentham Hurdles, of £1250; one mile and threequarters: Prize Ring, 11.10; Peter's Choice, 11.3; Bay Robe. 10.9; Skyhawk, 10.7; Shepherd's Mate, 10.6; Voltaire, 10.5; Amorlad, 10.2; Foxstar, 9.13; Peria Prince, 9.11; Glad Fox, 9.10; Rink, 9.9; Sporting Gold, Town Echo, 9.4; Waiting, 9.3; Duality, 9.2. The Trentham Hurdles has not drawn a select lot, but nevertheless a good field of improving hurdlers. Bay Robe has shown consistent' form lately as also has Skyhawk, Peria Prince, Voltaire and the improving Duality. Foxstar, third in the Great Northern Plurdles, is in On a handy handieap and has shown in trial schools at Trentham that he will not return home empty-handed. Rink has been expected 7 to show up for some time and his turn should come during the meeting, if not in this race. 3.25. — Whyte Handieap, of £2000; one mile: Soneri, 10.12; Beau le Havre, 9.11; Valley Boy, 9.10; Findon, 9.8; Hot Pursuit, 9.5; Joygiver, Howe, 9.4; Foxchase, Flying Tor, 9.3; Longsword, Young Trent, 9.2; Pensacolaj 9.1; Fortune's Smile, 9.0; Gulf J Stream, 8.13; Alamode, 8.12; Tutere, 8.11; Honora, Citation, 8.10; Sheilwyn, 8.9; Ramicourt, 8.7; Battle Dance, 8.6; Flying Gold, 8.5; Blanket, Po Marama, 8.3; Psalm, High Order, 8.0; Welcome Guest, Hulabaloo, 7.12; Lord Darnley, 7.10. Therlargest field of the day will parade for the Whyte Handieap. Howe, who was slightly sore yesterday, is the ruling favourite. He is a massive horse and as he is very fit will be one of the hardest rto beat. The class horse in the 'race is Soneri. This brilliant mare has the steadier of 10.12, but even with such a burden she is capable of successfully carrying it through if started. Hot Pursuit has earned friends by his good track work. Flying Tor, Young Trent, Pensacola, Fortune's Smile, Citation and Battle Dance are all fit horses. The distance will be bes-t suited to Hot Pursuit, Soneri, Howe, Flying Tor, Pensacola, Citation and Battle Dance. The company might, however, prove too strong for the recently promoted hack Citation, who should be ticked off as a prospect for the later days of the meeting. If a lightweight is to prevail it might prove to be Battle Dance. It is interesting to note the handy weight that Ramicourt is asked to carry. At his best he would be hard to beat. It is stated that Beau le Havre is a doubtful starter. 4.10. — Te Aro Hack Handieap, of £700; one mile: Siegtone, Griffin, Conerete, 9.4; Mr. Pym, 9.3; Copper Coin, 9.2; Erin's Pal, 9.1; Mercian Lad, Blackwater, 9.0; Magnus Lux, The Denbigh, Newel*-. Post, 8.12; Even Light, 8.-11; Lalla Meer, 8.10; Master Dink, 8.8; Sari, 8.5; Blue Moon, 8.4; Salut d'Amour, Lord Bradbury, 8.3; Nighthena, 8.0. Best form in the concluding event, the Te Aro Hack Handieap, is represented by Siegtone, Copper Coin, Mercian Lad, The Denbigh, Newel Post, Even Light and Lalla Meer. Capable of handling soft and heavy conditions the south has a good representative in Copper Coin. ' Newel Post showed at Hastings last Saturday that he is back to his best and a win at Trentham will not surprise. The Denbigh and Even Light have both won in heavy going. At Trentham Even Light is given good prospects in this event. Betting wilfibe win and place. Horses likely to be prominent in tomorrow's racing are: 11.0. — Mariri Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase (2£ mlies) — Royal Writ, Runaway, Ellerton Hall. 11.42. — Woburn Hack Handieap (7 ' furlongs)— Relampago, Ella Shields, Neville. 12.25. — Vittoria Hack Hurdles (If miles)— Desert Trek, Batal, Vassilikos. 1.10.— Stewards' Handieap (6 fur-
longs)— Lorna Leigh; Theocritus, Playtos. 1.55. • — Wellington Steeplechase (about 3£ miles) — Bright Fox, Abdicate, . Northfield. 2.41.— Trentham - Hurdles (If miles) — Foxstar, Bay Robe, Peria Prince. 3.25. — Whyte Handieap (1 mile) — Pensacola, Howe, Flying Tor. 4.10. — Te Aro Hack Handieap (1 mile)— Copper Coin, Conerete, The Denbigh.
