Roads Blocked and Rivers Still Rising

GISBORNE, July 4. . All- road outlets from Gisborne were blocked this morning following heavy overhight rain throughout the district, ranging from over' three and a half inches in the hill country to close on two inches in the town during the past 12 hours. Streams 4 are in high flood and still rising on both south roads, and the north rollte is impassable with three and a half feet of water over one bridge. The rain was accompanied by a gusty southeiTy. This morning the Waipaoa River had risen 17 feet and an alert was issued to settlers in anticipation of a rise to 20 feet, the flood danger l.evel". The Waikohu and Mangatu Rivers pre ru-nning high, the former spilling over the road at Whatatutu. Settlers at Te Arai are isolated through being unable to ford the swollen river. On the East Coast the main road is blocked by overflowing creek^ beyond Tokomaru Bay. The railway line to the south is clear, but on the branch line trains are unable to cross the flooded bridge at Puha.
