IMPORTATION OF FOOTWEAR TO BE PERMITTED
WELLINGTON, July 1. "Although it is nccessary to provide for additional supplies of footwear in the lmmediate futiire, tliere is every prospect that local industry, through its mcreased production trend, will be able, within the near future, to meet New Zealand 's requirements, " said the Minister of Customs, Mr. Nash, tonight, in ruaking an aunouncement concerning applieations for import licenees for certain classes of footwear. Mr. Nash said a eomplete investigat'ion of the leatlier footwear suppiy position wa3' recently arranged by Mr. Nordmeyer. This included an exaniination of pre-. 3ent retail stocks and of statistics of jocal production. The results of the investigation were discussed by Mr. Nordmeyer with representatives of the local industry and the conclusion stated above was reached. Mr. Nash said con-, sideration wouid tlicrefore be given to applieations from established shoe importers for licences to import ' leather footwear, other than slippers, included in the following categories: Children 's utilrty types: Boys, sizes ten to one, girls, ten to one, youths two to five, manls two to .fiye. Women 's utility type of slioes and men's walking shoes." The Minister said anv sueh applieations, which must be lodged with the Co'llectors of Customs, must be sujjportsd by, firstly, inforination as to the value of the applicant's imports of leather footwear ''other than children 's sizes nought to nine Ltjippers) in 1938; secoudly, definite . evidence that the xpecified quantity is available for early delivery; and, thirdly, a statement jhowing the number/of pairs of shoes in eacli eatcgory and the size which applicant desires to import.
