ROOFTOP REFUGE
WELLINGTON, .Tuni. 30. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Rilci thought their last day had come late on Saturday afternoon. When the Pukio Basin flooded they were marooned before ! they could do anything about it. That in itself wasn't too bad, but the water kept on rising, submerging not only their land but also their stoek and eventually most of their home. They were forced to talce refuge on the roof. There they stayed for three 'hours until Mr. Frank Siemonek heard their cries for help. Mr. Siemonek, wlio had done sterling work in the rescue of Mr. and Mrs. Duckmanton earlier in the day, summoned Messrs. Erin Flynn, Dave Flynn and Arthur Schenkel, who brought a small motorlaunch over from South Featherston on a trailer. They launched the boat from a rise on the Pukio Road and navigated by the tops of telegraph poles which marked the course of the road beneath. ■ Thbugh they had to watch for submerged trees, the rescue was carried ouh without further incident.
