One evening twelve years ago while the dons of Balliol Cojege, Oxford, were sipping their last glass of wine in Ihe senior common room, three figures silenllv stole to the door and introdueed a small liighly greased pig into the room. Tliey then slanimcd the door and disappcared into the darkness of the quadrangle where the most strenuous cfforts of the dons and procters failcd to locate them. A chanee romark let drop by a member of (he House of Lords during the debate on Ihe Transport Bill last week, unexpectedly provided the delighted llouse with a solution to the mystery "1 had no idea that remarks I made would cause such a disturbance, ' ' said tlie 33 vears old London'barrister, Lord Muheroft, referring to the reactious to an earlier speech. "I.am reininded of the oceasion when 1, togetlier with two other members of your Lordships House s'lcceeded in introducing a greased pig into the senior common room of Oxford College. " Lord Mancroft may or may not have forgotten that the kraster of Balliol. Lord Lindsay, was that day occupying his se.at in .the llouse but he was re minded when I.ord Lindsay rose abrupt ly in his seat and said: "So it was you was it?" Subsequently Lord Mancroft stead fastlv refuse'd to give the nanies of his eollaborators. "No names, no pack drill," he remarked. When asked what efifeet the pig had on the dons, he said: J'li you have introduced a pig into a senior common room you don't stay to watcli — you run like a black."
