Jnrdins sentcuiced to life imprisonment the fann boy, Oliver Terpenning, aged 3(5, after he ' liad pleaded guiltv to killing four play mates, aged 16, 14, 12 and 2 respeetive lv, while tliey were gathering wilcl flowers on Mav 1. Terpenning toki the Court that h« sliot the children, who were all members of one family, hecau.se he always want ed to know what it would feel like ro kill somebodv. Terpenning insisted that he sliot them on an impulse and did not at any time attempt to attack the girls, Barbara Bmith, aged 16, and Gladys Bmith, aged 13. When the ))odies were found the girls were still elutehing bunehes of violets and lilies. After the shooting Terpenning went liome and took the family ear, intend ing to flee to Canada, but lack of nioney caused him to ehange his plans and he was eaptured the following day near Erie.
