RIGHT TO HOLD OFFICE CHALLENGED

Received Tuesday, 9.40 p.m. SYDNEY, June 24. Events in the next few days will decide whether Mr. H. Sutherland, one of the most colourful figures in the trade union movement, will be ousted as State prcsident of the Federated Enginedrivers ' and Firemen's Association. Regarded as an outstanding industrial advocate, he has played a leading part for more than 20 years in major industrial struggles on the coalfields. _At the quarterly meeting of the executive his right to hold the presidency was challenged by three members on the ground that at the time of his eleetion he was no longer following the ealling of enginedriver. The ousting motion was defeated on his own casting vote. A motion of "dissent against his ruling that he was eligible to hold office was carried by one vote but he refused to accept this decision. The members challenging Mr. Sutherland describe themselves as Right wingers.
