•Received Tuesday, 7 p.m. LODDON, June 23. 'Compton and Edrich broke three ericket records on tlie second day of the second Test at Lords today. They beat the record third wieket stand of 245 in Tests against South Africa, which Frank Woolley and E. R. Wyatt established in 1929. They made 370 in 340 minutes eclipsing the world ;s best third wieket Test partnership, and that also set the partnership record for England against South Africa. The previous liighest was the Edrich — Gibb partnership of 280 at Durban in 1939.' Coinpton and Edrich continued their briiliant partnership "on a iirm, true pitch. Edrich took 17 from one of Smith 's overs. Melville set his ' field deep to keep the runs down, but thej batsmen. scored faultlessly and effortlessly. Edrich, in attempting a mighty hit oif Mann was bowled. He hit one six and 20 f ours in his 189, made in 335 minutes. Barnett joined Compton, who carried on to mahe his own liighest score before Rowan caught him off Tuckett. Compton had batted chancelessly for 350 minutes, scoring 20 fours. The remaining batsmep. went for runs. Barnett hit over a yorlcer and was bowled af'ter a merry knock. The others rapidly followed Barnett to the pavilion, but the scoring stayed well over one a.minute. South Africa 's hopes of a score big enough to avoid defeat rested on their four experienced batsmen — Mitehell, Melville, Viljoen and Nourse. Mitehell and Melville gave them a good start, taking special care against Wright and Pope, whom they were m'eeting for the first time tliis season. Mitehell was stumped when he stretched forward and missed. He had intended an offdrive. Wright caused Viljoen to playon a ball that was faster than usual. Nourse sliowed marked uncertainty at the beginning of his innings, but later played well. Melville at stumps required only four runs to complete his fourth successive hundred in Tests against England. His score included 11 fours. He was caught by Bedser olf Hollies at .117. The score at the luncheon adjourned was 200 for four wiclcets. England 's 554 for eight wickets created another record. It beat by three runs England 's second innings total in the Test at Nottingham. The King and Queen and the Princesses are visiting Lords tomorrow. This will be the first time either Princesses has seen a first-class cricket rnatch.
