OTAKI BOY SCOUTS

scouter's ANNUAL report The following is the an'nual report given by the scouter, Mr. B. F. Maruyn Renn'er, to the an'nual meeting of tne lirst Otaki Scout Group Parents' Committee: "The average roll has been abotit 21, the number carrying. between 19 and 24. There is plenty of scope for enlarging the.troop when it has been functio'ning for six or eight months. I will then have no difliculty in recruiting another patrol and bringing the, number up to 30. "Traini'ng in scout badge work is proceeding steadily. We have- the majority of our scouts invested and quite a number are training for their seco'nd class badge. Training classes have been held on Saturday mornings and for a p'eriod each Tuesday night. "Outside of regular troop meetings the troop has been active in other ways. Two scouters and 15 scouts represented the Otaki Group at the Founder's Day ceremony in Wellington. One scouter and ten scouts were present at the local observance of Anzac Day. . Three troop hikes were organised to Otaki Forks, up the Otaki River, and a hill climbing expedition from the end of Rahui Road. In addition some eight or more separate hikes were run by the patrols around the district. A rather modest parents' evening was run recently in conjunction with the pack in order to demonstrate to parents the type of work being carried out. The full attention of the troop is at present directed to the building of the patrol dens from the motor cases on Mr. Moffatt's property. To date about 15 boys have devoted some part of their weekends to" knocking out nails and stacking the timber. "The troop is at present in a fairly satisfactory condition although a great deal of work must be put in to get it into the category of a first rate troop. I would remind the committee that, having started from scratch, I will be unable to raise the troop to anywhere near that l.evel since I will be relinquishing my warrant at the end of the year. Further, if such progress as we have made this year is not to be lost as I understand has happened in the past, the committee must find a trained scouter to carry on next year. If some keen person could be found, he (or she) could be quite sufficiently trained by the end of the year, assuming he would not act as assistant till then, tocarr3f"n6n *^e '^trod'p 4fln8xtr year.* Finally, I would like to thank the committee for its help and cooperation. I must also aeknowledge the kindness of Mr. and Mrs. Moffatt for their help in the matter of the patrol dens."
