BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS

^ — Various Matters Discussed The June meeting of the Levin, Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night, the Mayor, Mr.. H. B. Burdekih, presidihg. Also present were: Crs. H. E. Bowen, A. O. Powell, V. E. Hudson, C. ~k. Cockrell, F. E. Parker, F. D. Chainey and W. Telford, and Mr. H. L. jenkins (towh cierk) . Leave of abs-ence was granted • Crs. D. J., Gardiner and C. Sherwood. . A request from- the RoyaL N.Z. Institute of Horticulture that the council, though it had deciine.d' to rhake a dohation to the institute, ihight consider .enrolling as a member in order that it" could receive bulletins and other literature periodically published was- received. It was decided that the towh clerk write to the institute and- ask for further particulars and details in regard. to the cost of enrolment. ' The president of the Levin R.S.A. Wrote advising that the. executive of the association would be pleased to meet the council at any convenient time in order to discuss the question of war memorials: The Council agreed that 7.30 p.m. next Monday would be a suitable date on which to meet the executive. Advice that the negotiations were still proceeding with Iocal bodies' associations in respect of fche proposed rate of contributions for sanitary inspection services Was received from the Department jf Health. The letter added that until such "time as finality was reached all contributions would be computed at the old rates. The question of a short and long range immigration poliGy for New Zealand would be discussed at a conference in Wellington on JUly 12, stated a letter from the Dominion Settlement and Population Association. The question would be discussed with particular regard to the present housing and manpower shortage, and an invitation was extended the council to be represented. The Government appeared to have a clear cut policy in regard to immigration, and he could not see that any benefit would be. derived . from such a meeting, said the Mayor. As no nominations were forthcoming, the letter was passed over.

The 'returning officer for the combined district advised that a vacancy on the Palmerston North Hospital Board existed as a res.ult Of the resignation of Mr. G. A. Monk. The vacancy affected the boroughs of Levin, Otaki and Shannon and it would be necessary for the local bodies in the combined district to appoint a suecessor for the. balance of Mr. Monk's term. Nominations would close at noon on June 25, and the council was requested to appoint three representatives to a meeting to finalise the appointment in the Cvent of more than one nomination being received. Following discussion Cr, Parker agreed to his nomination, providing that it was only for the period laid down in the letter. The Mayor and Crs. Powell and Bowen were delegated to represent the council at the proposed meeting. . An application was received from the Levin Badminton Club for permission to play badminton in the Regent Hall on Thursday nights in* addition to Tuesday nights. This was granted subjeet .to the hall not being required for indoor bowls and on the same conditions as for Tuesdays, provided always that the council did not require the hall for any other pur5pose. The unsatisfactory state of the water race fiowing through his property was brought to the attention of the council by Mr. A. T. Beaver, who requested that something be done to abate the nuisance arising therefrom. It was pointed out that the works committee had examined the area concerned, and Mr. Beaver had requested permission- to pipe the water through his property. No objection was raised to this suggestion, providing the work was done to the satisfaction and under the supervision of the council. A request to conduct a .street day in Levin, was made by the Friend to Sailors' Mission, but was declined by the council on the grqund that no dates were available for this year.
