Received Monday, 1'0.20 a-.-m. NEW YORK, June 22. An oil tanker exjpl-oded. in Los Angles Sarbour today and sta-rted. ihug-e .petrol fed fires in the ^ock atea df Longb'each. Three ihours after the blast -the flames -were Still unchecked and- - the fire had spanned Los Angles Harbour channel, gutting the ter-mijiai bf the American " Presiden't shipping line and threatening the adjacent Matson l'ine's terminal. First repor-ts are that'only two people had been. killed and ten injured, but the fate of the tanker Marakay and crew of about 20 is unknown. Damage so far is estim-a-ted at 10,000 dollars. Huge storage tanks brlmming with oil and petrol are in a patch bf fiame. 'The tanker Marakay was ° carrying butane whl'ch is a component of av'iat'ibn petrol and is highly inflammable. The Marakay waS; -tied up at the -Shell Qil pier on Mormon Tsland when the explosibn was heard seven miles away. The, 'tanker heeled over and is ' now; lying on her side -in the -channel with flames l'icking through -thewater. ; 'She was loading 112,000 barrels of' petrol when the explosion occurred. The police -remembering the Texas city disaster have blocked off the harbour area.
