A largeiy attended publie meeting last evening supported the presentation of a petition to the Governor-General protesting against the milling of kauri timber trces at the Waipoua forest reserve and praying that the GovernorGeneral impleinent the . original intenfcion to preserve Waipoua "in a state of natur.e for all time," by having the whole forest area of 39,000 acres declared a national park under a Board of Trust, and that milling and other State forest activities be ceased at once. The petition, which was largeiy signed, is to be circulated tliroughout New Zealand. Speakers empliasised that Waipoua is a unique forest possessiug vegetation and trees not found elsewhere in the world and should be regarded as a national heritage to be safeguarded against commercial exploitation.
