LONG QUEUES EXPECTED

SLOW PROGRESS WITH MOTOR RE-REGISTRATION The hope that motorists would ■make a special effort to re-regis-ter their vehicles early this year was made by the postmaster, Mr. L. A. Whitham, today. The indicafions were that the usual long ■queues would he experienced with -the -approach of the due date. Although additional assis.tapts have been employed at considerable inconvenience to other department-s of the post office, the office is frequently empty in the imprnings while long queues line up Well past closing time in the afternon. Of a total of 1200 cars and 600 other vehicles, only 250 have so far been re-licensed. Only eleven days are left ,and in order to avoid the last-minu-ie rush experienqed in regard to . the social security paymepts, he appealed to farmers to make the motor registration counter their first place of call Wnen they come to town, and .to firms and individuals to assist #ie - staff .by calling at the post office ^ts soon after 9 a.m. as possible. New number plates will not he issued this year, • but instead special .stic.kers will he used. '-It wgs -pointed out by the "traffic inspector yesterday that these -stickers must not be displayed before July 1, as it was' then Lmpossible - for offic.ers of ihe department to determine whetf\er the vehicle had been registered for the current registration periqd, ;and this would result in the dn.v.ers heing gtopped and questioned,^ perhaps unnecessarily.
