COUNCIL'S JUNE MEETING Presided over by the new chairman, Mr. A. J. Gimblett, the Horowhenua County Couhcil held its June meeting yesterday: Presr ent were: Crs. J. D. Aitchison, J. H. P. Liggins, A. M. Atkins, W. Taylor, W. Jenkins, A. M. Colquho.un and D. K. Guy. Also: the county clerk, Mr. F. jH. Hudson and ;acting-engineer, Mr. W. H. Fraser. A request by the Levin Golf Club for the clearing of the edges of Queen Street fronting the entrance to the Cheslyn Rise golf links was met by the council. In its letter, the club pointed out that the fern there was°preventing the use of the .ground for the parking of cars. Commenting, the fehairman, Mr. Gimblett, said the settlers in the vicinity had lodged complaints about the road being blocked by cars parking alongside the golf course. It was finally agreed that the council grant a £. for £ subsidy. Permission to move a fence on his proper-ty in Heatherlea East Road was sought by Mr. H. J. Lancaster. The fence would be requirej to be mo-ved from the front of his property, faeing Heatherlea East Road, to the edge of a deep cutting. The area had been a source of trauble to drovers for years,, and the present fence was being continually- broken by cattle. The area was also overgrown with fern. It was agreed that permission to make the alterauon be given at the pleasure of the council. A letter from Mr. T. Hayes, Arawata Road,. drawing 'attention to,.' the condition of a drain running along Arawhata and Hokio Roads, and into the main drain, was recei.ved by the council. The letter added that water from this dr-ain w-as encroachipg on his property, and he tru&ted the council would soon mndertake the clearing of it. It was decided that the councillors for .the riding and the engineer inspect the area and report back to the council. The Wellington City Mission w-rote reques.ting improvements to the access at its camp at Otaki. It was agreed that an investigation should be made, and fo.r this purpose _ the representatives for the riding and engineer were instructed to contact the custodian of the cemp. A letter from Messrs, W. L. and C. E. Bryant, Manakau, requesting the council to improve the access to their property was received, but the clerk was instructed to reply that as the road was a purely private one'not.hing could be done.
An application for the renewal of the Hcenee for the Waikanae Motor Camp by Mr. H. T. Tlyard was approve.d-, subject to a satisfactory report from the sahitary inspector. It was pointed out that the lieepse for thjs camp had been suspended by the inspector when it had been revealed that certain army huts on the ground were being used as permanent residences. In his letter, Mr. Tilyard pointed out that these huts had now- been evacuated with the exeeption of two„ which would have been by the time the council held its meeting. A request for the sealing of the area in fropt of the Waikanae Beach Motor Canip and Store Company was submittbd, it being stated that the area was us.ed as a has termina! and turning point, and also senved as a parking area for visitors' cars. The niatter was referred to Cr. Jenkins and th'e engineer, who were requested to in§,pect the area and report back to the council.
