The borough- foreman (Mr. F. Haley) was also present. , A communication was received from Mr. H. L. Jenkins, as returning officer for the combined district of the boroughs- of - Levin, Otaki and Shannon, inviting nominations to fill the vacancy on the Palmerston North Hpspital Board caused by the resi'gnation oi Mr. G. A. Monk. The letter pointed out that it will be necessary for the several local authoriti.es -of the combined district, by agreement among themselves/to appo'int some qualifled person to his place as representative of the district. In the event of more than- one nomination being received, it is the intention of the returning officer

to call a meeting of representatives of the local- bodies to finalise. the appointment. The matter was held over until-the next meeting. ... . The town clerk (Mr. J. T. Bovis) reported on a meeting of local bodies recently held in Levin in connection with the • appointment of a • district health inspector . and building inspector. Mr. Bovis stated that Shannon will carry on as in the past, and'on the motion of Cr. Lind it was decided to agree to the conditions as laid down by the Health Department. The town clerk handed to Cr. C. G. Wishart the registration papers and warrant of fitness for the. new fire .engine. ■ An extract from: the Gazette and plan of • regional ^ works for the Manawatu and Wairarapa districts, to be carried out by the Works Department,-- were tabled. equipped to meefc . any emefgency, and the other alterations could be approved of at a later date. On the motion of the Deputy-Mayor, it was agreed that the brigade be given permission to make immediate provision for housing the machine, and the council representatives on the brigade make an Inspection of the work which would be necessary to make permanent alterations and report to the next meeting of the. council. The chairman 1 of the works committee (Cr. R. R. Lind) spoke at length on the bouneil's proposal of carrying oiit surfacing work on the borough streets and alterations to the waterwprks. Mr. Lind stated that Mr. Acheson, an engineer of Palmerston North, had agreed to visit Shannon and discuss the proposal with councillors. The meeting terminated with the passing of accounts amounting to £76 4s lOd for payment.
