^ . t* , V • otaki borough gouncil meets \ • The monthly meetihg of the Otaki Borough Council was held on Wednesday night, the Mayor,. Mr. C. F. Atmore, presiding. There were also present: Crs. Young, Giihblett, Hakaraia, Bennett arid Cook. An apology for absence was received from Cr. Bartosh. ! In connection with Mr. Marshall's sub-division it was reported that pipes, etc., had been ordered, but that some of the nttings were not.yet to hand. ^ Relative to the ground allotted for hockey, it was stated that this was not yet in order, while buildings were also necessary. It was suggested that these -should be erected and the ground improved. It was f urther pointed out that the ground now available on the domain was insufficient for games such as hockey. Ah application was received from clubs desiriiig the section at the back of the State houses, and requests were granted. It was considered by Cr. Cook that about £i00 would be needed towards the erection of suitable dressing rooms, septic tank, etc. The area of the ground was stated to be one and a-half acres, and it was agreed that the domain committee give the ground, etc., attention. Cr. Cook reoorted that he had attended a meeting in Palmerston North in regard to the Regional Planning Council. He agreed to continue as the council's representative. Cr. Young reported that representatives of the Internal Affairs Department had viewed the soldiers' plot at the Otaki Cemetery and were well pleased with the work carried out. Inspector Davis reported that during the month there had been much wandering stock on the roads, and that he had found it .difficult to impound at times because of the distance stock had to be driven. For the month eight cases would be heard at court. There had been fewer driving tests taken. The signs for the hospital entrance had 'not yet come to hand, but should soon arrive. He had issued three traffie offence notices within the borough and four outside. There had been a big improvement relative to riding 'cycles at night without lights. -The . .WairaraPjaTl^angwiatu u Employers' Association advised tha"t the Labourers' Union had issued a citation for a new - award for municipal workers, but had sent citations only to a few of the local bodies affected. When a new award was made it would affeet the council. The existing award would be in use, but at an early date fresh amendments would be made. — Received. It was reported that Mr. G. A. Monk had resigned his position on the Palmerston North Hospital Board as representative of the Otaki, Levin and Shannon boroughs, and that a new appointment was necessary. Nominations woUld be invited, to close on June 25. It was pointed out that Mr. Vic. Cottle was willing to accept the • position, and the council agreed to give him support. If, however, there were other nominations the decision would be left to representatives of the local bodies interested. The Mayor and Crs. Gimblett and Youhg were appointed to represent the council. - ' A circular from the Department of Internal Affairs stated that the election of members of the fira, board was to be held in June. Crs. Gimblett and Cook' were re-elect-ed as the council's representatives. Cr. Gimblett intimated that he would not be seeking * re-election to the council, and asked if he was eligible for the position. The town clerk (Mr. Alex. Wilson) assured him that he could be appointed whether he was a member o'f the council or not. An application to start a oiecart business in Otaki was declined. The Otaki Commercial Association wrote asking for the appointment of three representatives from the council to . meet two from the association in regard to the camping ground at Tasman Beach. It was stated that Mr. McBeth (president) and Mr. Buxton had been appointed as the association's delegates, while it was suggested that the meeting ■be held on some afternoon on the camp site in the near future. It was considered that a great deal of time had already been lost over the matter • of the camping ground, while it was stated that trees had been planted in wrong places. Crs. Hakaraia, Cook and Bartosh were appointed to meet the representatives of the association. The works committee recommended that Riverbank Road reserve be cleared and made flt for sport, and that the council' consider the purchase of a tractor. — Adopted. The matter of a tractor w^s considered necessary, it being pointed out that if a suitable one was procured it would be able to do. much good' work. The Mayoi7 reported that with Cr. Cook and Mr. Wilson, town clerk, he had attended the meeting- at Levin in regard .to building and health ingpection in the dis-

trict. The council approved the motion passed at that meeting to the effect that the present arrangement for health inspection should be retained.
