WELLINGTON, June 12. ' 'During the first week of the Department 's drive against f aulty heaalights, some 1240 vehicles were tested," said the Commissioner of Transport (Mr. G. L. Laurenson) in a statement. ' ' These tests have been carried ont tliroughout the countsy by the Department 's traffie and vehicle inspectors following a recent statement by the Minister of Transport." ■ . Commenting on the results of the tests so far conducted, Mr. Laurenson went on to say that, of. the vehicles tested, no fewer than 387 ■ or 31 .per cent. had some serious defect in their lights. Of these defects 202 or 16 per cent. were caused through the f aulty focussing of the maih headlight' heams, this fault heing the main cause oi dazzle to oncomii% drivers. ' ' This high pereentage • of vehicles with faulty headlights shows very clearly tliat there. are still a number or drivers who do not take suffieient care to see that their lights are kept in good ■condition and correetly focussed, " said Mr. Laurenson. "I would therefore urge all inotoristS who have not already done so, to have an immediate check on their headlights and ensure that any f aults are remedied as soon as possible. "During the campaign, traffie inspectors have been paying more than usual atteption to drivers who dos not dip their lights for approdching traffie," continued the Commissioner. ""fcio far, however, only 19 drivers have been found offending in this way and it is pleasing to see that the great majority of drivers realise this obligation to other road users."
