BUTCHER'S SHOP CLOSED BY FOOD OFFICE
WELLINGTON, June 11. The butchery of A. E.- Preston, Ltd., Willis Street, Wellington, will be closed from next Monday by order of the Food Control Office on the ground that its sale of meat has exceeded the value of coupons taken. Situated in one of Ihe busiest areas of the city, how long it would be closed could not be ascertaiued today but an official of the Food Control Office stated that it would be " a matter of weeks. " The closing down of the shop was the fauit of the rationing system and was due to an attempt to meet the needs of the public," said Mr. A. E. Preston, junior, today. At rush times it was impossible for assistants to make a check to see if the right value of coupons was being handed across for meat. Some customers were reluetant to give any coupons while others did not give the proper number. He did not wish to blame the assistants or custoihers fo-r the condition arising. That was quite natural under the circumstances. To attempt to make a proper check of coiipons that were handed in could not be done during the present shortage of labour, without slowing down business to almost a hopeless degree.
