APPEAL FOR SQUATTERS WHO WERE EVICTED
WELLINGTON, June 6. "This evening marks the end of the time by which the squatters in Abel Tasman Ilouse, Berhampore, are to be out of the premises as a eonsequence of a court decision," commented the sec.retary of the Wellington distriet conunittee of the Communist Party, Mr. A. B. Skilton, today. "Because of thc pliglit of the affected families, a lettor has been sent to the Prime Ministei asking him to niake a public statemeul on the Government 's intentious towards the squatters, with— the particular ob ject of iinding aceommodation for them. ' ' He was advised, said Mr. Skilton. that the fmes, costs and legal expenses falling upon the squatters amounted to £144. The Prime Minister had been advised that the men were mostly returned scrvieemen who previouslj' had been living in desperate eireumstances entailing heavy financial commitments Some unfortunately had been separated from their wives and children. The opin ion had been expressed to the Prime Minister that altfernative aeeommoda tion, even of a temporary nature, should be made available and immediato action was asked. It was also submitted that temporary aceommodation should be used for families in desperate eireumstances before immigrants were provided with aceommodation.
