v Post Office Has Busy Day The local post office staff had a busy time on Tuesday, which was the finla day .for furnishing land and income tax and soclal security returns. Througliout the whole of the day large crowds congregated in the office. State House Construction Excellent progress is being made on the State house units on the corner of Ballance and Margaret Streets. The foundations for all four hcuses are coinplete and the framework of one unit is now in the final stages. Church of England Dance The ladies of the Church of England Guild held the first of a new series of .their popular dances in the ' Parish Hall on Monday evening. There was a good gathering of danclng enthusiasts present and a most enjoyable evening was spent dancing to the music supplied by Miss D. Wood. As usual the guild ladies provided a delightful supper. New Fire Engine Ready The town clerk, -Mr. J. T. Bovis, received a telephone message yesterday from the -Wellington motor firm supplying the new#fire engine, advising that the macliine is now ready for delivery. Members of the brigade will Vi.sit Wellington this week to carry out an inspection of it before taking delivery. It is expected that the machine will be in Shannon by the end of the week. Fourth Grade Football The recently-formed fourth grade football team played their first game of the season last Saturday, when they were defeated by College A. The local boys did very well against a much stronger and more experienced team. There is no doubt that, remaining as keen as they are at present, and after playing a few games together, they will be winning their fair share of matches. Maori Pah Improvements The Maoris of this district -are making an appeal to carry out improvements to the Poutu Pah at Moutoa. It is not necessary to remind the public of the excellent way in which the Maori people have assisted their pakeha friends to faise funds on many occasions in this district. It is hoped that the public will give their full support in- this appeal td modernise the Poutu Pah. Hot Water Bottles in Demand With the co'ftiif|g: of fhe frosty r nights the demand for 'hot water bottles has been great. " One business firm advises that ovef -two dozen have been sold since the first frost made • its " appearance. It is interesting to not,e that the • majority .of the eustomers. "have been young people. This gives the indication that ' the rising generation is not as hRfdy a& tlia pion-v . eers. Inter-Street Rugby Game A suggestion that the Ballance Street-Plimmer Terrace football match be revived- has been circulating around the town recently. The first match between these two streets was played at the local domain on Saturday, July 23, 1927, alniost twenty years ago. In order to foster the return of this fixture, a report of that early match has been supplied by Mr. J. Curran and will be reprinted in Saturday's issue.
