By Telegravh-
GISBORNE, June 5. The Minister of • • Works, a Mr, Sempie, repiied today to Dr. P, Dunsheath's statemehts on the; reasohs why the Dominion did not proceed with the. Maraetai power 'scheme at the maximum speed. Mr. Sempie said that the policv today was to concentrate on Maraetai, which would add 200,000 kilowatts ta the North Island output. "Whether we can take on any other Work in the Waikaremoana, area or anywhere else in the North Island will depend on whether we have a surplus of men and materials after Maraetai is manned and supplied." In reply to Dr, Dunsheath's criticism, Mr. Sempie said the department did not have men skilled on tunnel joba to work 24 hours daily for seven days weekly on the Waikato job. The department was unable to get strong, young men to replace the old tunnellers who had had their day. uDr. Dunsheath cannot be aware that the factors holding us up in New Zealand are affeeting every eountry in the world. We have to train key men or we can't get on with the job, even if we assemble enough men for other construction works."
