BANDS IN LEVIN
"PAN."
Sir, — May I through your paper put forward a suggestion to the exeeuuive of the Levin Boys' Band and the citizens of Levin? As has been announced, the Levin Municipal'Band is to have its own junior band and one of the functions of the boys* band will not be necessary — uhat of training lads for the senior band, One of the. good things about the boys' band • nas been the training of reed players,- of which I understand ohere are some 14 at present. Ree?,players have been very short over// che past few years and I ventifi$V to suggest that the boys' band change its name to the "Levin Symphonic Band," to facilitate the introduction ' of both reed and brass • instruments. How many reed pLayers are available I cannot say, but I know of brass players who feel they cannot give the' time to the senior band that a normal contest band requires, but would still weleome the chance to play in a cbncert band requiring a normal weekly practice and playouts. Most of thdse players are not attached , to any bancl, and two I have in mind were elected to the boys' band committee at the last annual meeting. Now, Sir, I pass these suggestions on, hoping that the citizens who understand this type .of band will back it up and that the committee of the boys' band will give it at least some consideration. The boys' training will ' not be affected by the change. Indeed it might be an advantage to have a few adult players in the band to help them aiong. Yours etc.*,
