-Press Assoeiation

By Telegraph-

CHRISTCHURCH, June 3. , A much more drastic restriction of power consumption in the South Island was annonnced today by the acting district electrical en'gineer, Mr. E. E. James. This week the eut is 20 per cent of the consumption last week but next week it will be 30 per eent of the consumption in the highest corresponding week of the previous three years. In other words the South Island next week will be on a 70 per cent quota based on last year's consumption, compared with 80 per cent this week. Mr. James said the allocations to power snpply anthorities would be reviewed every week and might be" altered from time to time but the basis of computation would remain the same as that adopted for next week, the highest consumption for the corresponding week in the last three years. Supply anthorities have not yet stndied the oft'ect of the new allocations but they believe that it will be necessary to cut power off completely in individual substation areas at times.
