The arrest of Liberal and aliegjd Comnimiist students, newspapermen, intellectuals, workefs' and professional men continued in Oiiinese cities today as tlie •Government moved 011 a broad frofit to sniash opppsitiofi criticism - ivithin its own-territories. Three students at Hankqw were xiMed, several otliers injured and a number arrested tli'is morning vvhen police end Government plaiii-clothes agents invaded Wuiian University and clasliecl witl the un.dergTaduat.es. Hundreds were arrested in a city-wide siveep of Chung'king last night during a juddenly imposod period of mar,ial law. Those.- taken from homes and work places includecl eight staff members of t'h.e Chung'king edition of the Liberal Ta Kung Pao, generally rated as Chma's leading newspaper, seven from the Lib- ■ eral New People 5s Daily ineluding the editor, and a number from other papers. Students, workers . and intellectuals are also rcported to have been gaoled in the general roundup. • In Canton 20.00 parading students of the Sun Yat Sen University elashed with Government agents. Scores were beaten and a number arrested though none was killed. In Nanking itself a state of alert existed at midnight with the number of police cloubled and troops patrollmg' the streets at many points -in the city. A black list has been prepared in Nanking of persons tlie Government eonsiders undesirable and arrests may be made at any time. Many arrests were made in Shang'hai today. Students of praetieally all the Shang'hai universities continued the strike with many proi'essors of the Chiaotung University and Fun Tan Universty who yro protesting against the arrest of students.
