Alarmed at the declining birthrate the Commonwealth Government is considering granting allowances to young couples. He could not indicate . what form the aliowances would take or how large they would be. Only 1 three countries, Russia, Germany and Argentine, had given allowances to young married couples. Renewed efforts will he made to make operative the joint parliament „ ary committee on social security which has not functioned since the last Parliament. The Opposition representatives have yet to he selected. Mr. Calwell stated recently that Australia was "bleedmg to death' and that if the population decline. continued there would he no Austra lia in 50 years.
