STRIKES SPREAD IN CHINESE CITIES

0 Eeceived Sunday, 7 p.m. SHANGHAI, May 23. Martial law was declared today in Shanghai and Peiping in an attempt to halt demonstrations in which students of both cities are demanding that the civil war be ended. More than 40,000 students in Shanghai began a new strike in protest against the beating of students by the police during a demonstration in Nanking on Tuesday. At Peiping. martial law was' de'clared for seven hours after rioting at Chaoyang College, in which one youth' was reported shot and killed, and 11 others wounded. The student strikes are spreading to high school students with, it is reported, 30,000 students away from classes. Forty-three high sehools and universities are affected by the strike.
