WIGHT PULLS OUT TO GET PUBLIC SYMPATHY.
AUCKLAND, May 23. Professional golf ers competing in the victory tournament at Titirangi' this morning carried out their overhight threat to refuse to take part in the first round of mateh play unless T. W. Wight, the 21-year old professional of •Dunedin, withdrew from the competition. As a resuit Wight, who yesterday won £100 for finishing second in the 72 hole medal event, agreed to withdraw. He will retain the £100 prize money won yesterday, but Wisemans, Ltd., the promoters, have decided to award another £100 to A. Guy, of Auckland, the professional who filled third place. Wight 's name was erased from tha list of qualifiers on the board this morning, and a f'resh draw was made for the professionals. : The attitude of the professionals caused a eontroversy todav, and players, sympathising with Wight, opened a subscription list which is being heav"ily subscribed to by'players and mem•bers of the public.
