SERVICEMEN'S GRAVES
WORK TO COMMENCE ON LEVIN PLOT A decisive -move towards the establishment of a servicemen's plot in the Levin cemetery resulted from a visit to Levin yesterday of members of the War Graves Commission. Negotiations for such a plpt have been proceeding for the past three years.- The original plan had been approved by Cabinet, but lack of building materials and labour have prevented the work from proceeding. Accompanied by local R.S.A. officials, the • commission visited1 the cemetery and inspected the. area. The result was a promise that . strong recommendations • would be made to the Public WorksDepartment that- the work commence immediately. It was pointed out, however, that in view of the present building difficulties, the original plan would have to be modified considerably. A low brick wall and memorial gate, which had been included. in the original plan, would have to be omitted mean while. Aecommodation for 196 graves had been antieipated, but only half of those could be allowed. for at present. ' The plot will follow a pattern, which is being recommended .universaily by the Infernal Affairs Department insofar as war gra've plots are concerned. It will beentirely in 1 lawn, with- ihset plaques. The entrance will be from Tiro Tiro Road.
