facts of interest to young aspirants ; With the re-commencement of the game of hockey in Otaki, it is the intention of the writer. in;;a series of short articles, to explain the game in detail, and give to players and aspirants such hints and comments -.which may be of use to them, and to the public, in following the game. - - . The lay-out of the ground is a point of primary importance. It should be rectangular, 90 to 100 yards long for clubs, not less than 85 yards long for schools, and not more than 60 or less than 55 yara wide. ' The ground shall be marked with white lines, and flags erected at each corner, and at the centre of each side line. All flag posts should be at least four feet high. Goals shall consist of two posts four' yards apart, joined by a horizontal cross-bar seven feet from the ground, inside measurement. PoSts shall not extend upwards -beyond the cross-bar. The posts and cross-bar shall be cwo inches wide and not more than three inches deep. Nets must >e affixed to the goals. In front of each goal shall be drawn a white line four yards long, parallel to, and fifteen yards from bhe goal line. This line shall dl continued each way to meet „the goal line by quarter circles, having the goal posts as centres. The space shall be known as the striking circle. The weight of the ball •shall not be more than 5£ ounces md not less tnan 54. Sticks must have no insets or fittings, nor have any sharp edges. Each stick must be so that it will pass through a two-inch ring. An india-rubber ring may be used, but the total weight of a stick must not exceed 23 ounces. Surgical binding is allowed on a stick as tong as it passes through a twoinch ring. Players must wear skirts, tunics or divided skirts; skirts to l?e of not less than knee length, and in no case longer than 14 inches from the ground. Tunics shall be of not less than one and not more than four-and-a-half inches off the ground when the player kneels. Divided skirts must be made from patterns supplied by the N.Z.
