WELLINGTON, May 20. The Mihistef of Supply, Mr. Nordmeyer, deputising for the Prime Minister, opened the sixth Science Congress tod'ay. He said Yhat sdientists. might yet help to solve the probiem of inducing people to bear the shortages they experierieed with more equanimity uhan they did today. Touching on what the use of atbmic energy might do for_ the world for good Of evil, the Minister said: 'Tt ffiay be that in the hapds of scientists it will become a boon and a blessmg.to men." If the report from London of the plans for the construetioh ■ of an electric power plant driven by atomic energy were true, the world might be on the verge of a new era. The Dominion's ten-year plan might become obsolete hy comparison, and Other Sources of energy might repldce eiectrieal schemes. He promised that if ahy worthwhile sciehtifle project in New Zealgnd seemed "haffipered by laek of finance, the Government would see to it that- money did not stand in the way * of what. nught to be achieved in. the scientific field. The Mayor, Mr, Will Appleton, in Welcoming the 600 delegates to the city, suggested that possibly the conjunction of meteorological experts from Wellington and elsewhere was responsible for the "uypical windless Wellington day," as another speaker had . called it.
