WAR MEMORIAL SUBSIDY

BOROUGH COUNCIL'S OFFER TO LEVIN R.S.A. That a point had bedh reached Where the council should offer to1 mfeet the Levin R.S.A. and discuss the obtainmg of a Governnient ,Subsidy for the memorial hall project was the opinion expressed by the Mayor, Mr. H. B. "Burdekin, at a meeting of the Levin Borough Council last night. A citcular had been read from the Department of Internal Affairs outlining the procedure to be adopted in applications for'subsidies by those local authorities who were considering the erection of coinmunity cfentres as war memorials. , His Worship said that when he waited on the Minister of Finance, Mr. Nash, on behalf of the R.S.A., he had indicated that the local project was not within the four \valls' of those for which the subsidy would be available in that it was not to be vested in the local , authority. The main portion of the i>roposed memorial hall building was to be left for the beriefit of the town and district ih pro- , vidihg an adequate public hall, , which was not available at present.t He felt the council and R.S.A. should explore the matter in an endeavour to find some basis : on which it could obtain the . maximum subsidy. If the original . scheme was to be carried out the i subsidy would be necessary. ;} The council decided to write .to [ the R.S.A., offering its co^-opera-tion and sUggesting that the two bodies confer on the sUbject.
