TOBACCO COMPANY AT OTAKI
® A GOOD START MADE Messrs. W." D. and H. O. Wills, Ltd., who have opened a tobacco factory at Otaki Railway, commenced work on Wednesday with nearly 20 on the staffi and prospects of many more joining-dur-ing the next> week or two. The lighting . and - general arrangements are , .all that could be desired, and the staff is working under conditions second to none. The theatre is well suited for the work to be done. It is under the able supervision of Mrs. Buttonton, while Mr. Chater, who has also had wide experience in the manufacture of tobacco, is frequently in attendance. The young ladies, . in their brown and green costumes, are happy and contented and highly pleased with their work. Their sorting out of the leaves after they have - been through various processes show them to have gained expert knowledge in a very short time. The cloakroom, canteen and various other amenities set up for their benefit are all appreciated. Other facilities required will receive immediate attention. Applications for positions are still being invited, and although there are several of the hands from various parts of the coast, and . a number from Wellington, the company can cater for many more. The tobacco industry, as far as the firm is concerned, is growing in leaps and bounds, and at the rate tobacco leaf is being treated at the various factories of Messrs. W. D. and H. O. Wills, Ltd., the tobacco sliortage will be considerably reduced. While some of the leaf is American, a consider- ' able quantity is New Zealand grown.
