Rec.eived Thursday,- 11.45 a.m. v.; - LONDON, May 14. The imrhediate formation in, Britafn of an oyganisation to promote the cause of a united Furope was called for by Mr. Churchill in an address to a "United Europe" meeting, in Albert Hall tbnight. Mr." .Churchill said many of the greatest things could be expressed in the single word — -freedom.
The real demarkation between Europe and Asia, continued Mr. ; Churchill, was a system of beliefs and ideas called Western Civilisacion. Europe was the spiritual conception, but if ' men ceased to hold it in their minds and feel. its worth in their hearts, it would die. Eur.ope now -was a -rubble heap, a charnel house and a breeding ground of pestilence and hate. "Ancient nationalistic feuds and modern ideologica'l factions distract qnd infuriate the unhappy and hungry populations, and evil teachers urge the paying off of old
scores. Are the European states to continue forever to squander the first fruits of their toil on the ereetion of new barriers, military fortifications, tariff walls and passpor-t networks against one another? The peoples of Europe still have it in their power to sweep away the horrors and missries surrounding them, and to allow the • streams of freedom, happiness and abundance Jto begin again their heali-ng flow. "Tjhis is a supreme5 oppor-tun^ ity, and if it be cast away nobody .can- predict that it will -e-ver return, .or what the resulting 'catastrophe will be."
