Press Association)

ElECIOBAl C0URT GIVES ITS DECISION 0N RAGLAN SEAT" ^

(Per

HAMILTON, May 14. A decision that Mr. A. C. Baxter, Labour candidate for the Raglan electorate in the 1946 General Elections, had -a valid majority over Mr. Hallyburton Johnstohe, the National Party candidate, was made by the Electoral Court, cbmpTising the Chief Justice, Sir Humphrey O'Leary, and the Senior Puisne Judge, Sir Archbald Blair. The decision on the petition submitted by Mr. Johnstone, asking that he be e'lected inplace of Mr. Baxter, was given shortly after mid-d'ay. As a result of the findings Mr. Baxter's majority is reduced from the 33 of the magisterial recount to 13 votes, with a further six votes upon which the court could not agree. However, it is pointed out that if all these votes were deducted from Mr. Baxter's total, he would still have a majority of , seven,- and, therefore, the court accordingly determined that Mr. Baxter be duly elected and returned.
