R.S.A. QUEEN CARNIVAL
FORMATiON OF SUB-COlVflTTEE FIRST MOVE The first move in the laupching of the proposed R.S.A. Queen Carnival was the formaliion by tne Memorial Hall Fund Comittee,, on' Monday night,. of a sub-commikee do interview the vari'ous organi'sariions and business- people and enlist thei'r sUppPrt. When th'e subjeet was raised at last night's meeting of tlie eommittee, the president,. Mr. H. J. JLancaster, stated that there was OpposSition in some cireles to the ihtensificatiPn of the drive for funds for the erection of a memorial hall, and' the sUggestion had oeen forthcomin'g that the eom1--mittee go into recess unfil such atim'e as a p'elmit for the- erection Of the buildin'g was aufhorised1. -Opinions had been expressed that as the 'g-ranting of a permit for Such wo-rk was unlikely for some jime,. in view of the present housmg situation*,. it would be wi'ser to refrain from further . a^eals meanwhdle. The IV^inister for Housiing- had. intimated, accordi-n-g, to One informant, that the housing Situation would not be -caught up with' for five- y'ea'rSi and it was Unlikeiy that permits- for the erection" of su'ch buildings as amem'bri'al hall would' be -approved Whil'e1 the p'ositi'on remained as* i-t-Was today. While appreciating this point, the president said he was reluct'ant. to' see the com-' mittee go i'nfo rec'eSs' before the object it Was aimlhg at had been achieved. There' Was' the danger, he added", that such actioiV Would result in l'oss Of contact, and a dying of enthusiasm by the committee.^ • Mr. Lancaster felt' th'e committee should contmue to raise as much money as possible while the people had' the money and were still interested ih the project. Also, they had the promise of thi's Government that all money raised for silCh buildings' would* be subsidised £ for £, and this should be taken full advantage of. All present expressed similar views; upholding the opi-nion that it would' be difficult to "pick up the threads" after a lapse of some years, and that the effort shouldc'Ontinu'e while all- were enthusiasti'c. 'On the advice of Mr. N. M. Thomson, it was deei'ded- that a sub-committee be appointed and that business, sports and the Maori people be approaeh'ed with the sugge'Stion and asked to o-rgamse" separate committees for the suggested qUeens, nameiy. business, lifaofi; Sports and, services. For this purpose .the' following were electea: Messrs; P. T. -Young,L . W. Allen, J. J. Gallagher, J-. H-. Allen* and A>. T. Fletcher. It was also- agreed' th'at the proposed stoek dri-ve should b'e' ihcorporafed in- the carnivar. . .
