LETTER TO THE EDITOR

FILMS SCREENED IN LEVIN Sir, — This is. a'n, open letter to' the Mayor and Councillors of Levin. CajjL they do nothlng to improve the pictures scf eened at the local theatre? When the lease was . re'newed last year the management was asked to get better pictures. Instead they have gone from ba'd to .worse and the last few months have been absolutely terrible. No British pictures have been shown either. Does the management think all the people in Levin are a lot of "nitwits"? . I can assure them that the majority of the people are thoroughly fed up and it is time the Mayor and Councillors, as our elected representatives, took firm steps to enforce the theatre management to improve. the screenings. We are in the unfortunate position in this .town of having only one. theatre, and it is almost the sole form of enfertainment nondancers can enjoy. 'I trust the Mayor will, in his usual forthright fashion, do some-" .thing in this niatter. Seores of good pictures shown in the main centres have apparently never been heard of by the local theatre management. Y.ours etc., J. ANDERSON. Ohau, May 7. On *the above letter being referred to the Levin Borough Council, the town clerk (Mr. H. L. Jenkins) said that when the question of films exhibited in the Regent Theatre, both as regard to the quality of the pictures and the dates of release, was before the council . some* little time ago, the matters were referred to the Film Industry Board, at Wellington, and its report stated (inter alia) that United Theatres, Ltd., were providing excellent service to the town-, and the company's booker was always ehdeavouring to get. early dates of all high grade pictures. O'n the average weekend attractions had been screened 34 weeks after the conclusion of the Wellington season, which average compared more than favourably with many much larger towns. With regard to British pictures, those screened • in the Regent Theatre," says the repOrt, were of high quality and a high proportion of those released and available. — Editor.
