Fatal Fall Hhrough Skylight Falli'ng through, a skylight at the Addington . railway workshops yesterday, Frederick George McNaughton, aged 45, was killed instantly. Mr. McNaughton, who was an employee at the workshops, was repairing the skylight when the accident occurred. He fell on to a machine below. Band to Play Out Tht Levin Municipal Band, under the conductorship of Mr. G. R. Lester, will render a progamme of music in the Public Gardens oh Sunday afternoon at 2.30 • p.m. With favourable autumn weather it is the band's intention to make these performances more frequent than they have been in the past. Second Hand Cars The possibility of the Government having in view the introduction of a systemvof price control for second hand.imcitor cars, is being discussed in motor trade circles. When' ;tke subject was raised yesterday ''with the Acting Minister of Industries and Commerce, Hon. A, H. Nordmeyer, he declined to comm.ent. Disturbance on Train A disturbance pn the, Welling-ton-Auckland express yesterday led to the appearance in the Levin Court today of Hehry Bruce, salesman, aged 38, of Auckland, on a charge of drunkenness. He was fined £5 by .Messrs. D. J, Gardiner and G. Sweetman. Constable R. Gillespie told fhe court that he had been requested by the guard to remove Bruce ffom the train. Award to Wolf Cui> The special , correspondent of the New Zealand Press Assocation in Lo'ndon reports that the Certificate of Merit of the Boy Scouts Association has been awarded a nine-year-old Wolf Cub, Richard Taylor, of Levin, for saving the life of his school teacher, Miss White. from serious injury. _ She fainted and fell into " a fire' ahd though other children panicked, Taylor kept his head, put out the flames with a jug" of water and ran for help. High Birth Rate The birth rate in Levin is continuing to i'ncreaSe. Last month 20 births ' were registered by the registrar, Mr. H. J. Henderson, as against 16 during the same period l last year. Two. deaths were recorded as against ■ eight, while marriages numbered eight as compared with seven the previous year. There were no marriages by the registrar this month, though three were conducted during the sam'e period last year'. Weekend Power Position Power cuts this weekend will. follow the norma! daily schedule, except that there will be no cut on Friday and Sunday nights, stdtes the Horowhenua Power Board's secretary, Mr. R. A. Frederikson. The cold weather experienced this week had resulted in a deterioration in the position, with the result that it will not be possible to give the same extension to waterheaters as was possible last week. There might be some relaxion, but this'- will depend on the number of 'units that are available. at the end of the week. Beautifying Levin Another step towards the beautifying of Levin has been the levelling and sowing down dn grass of the triangle 3haped section immediately . opposite the Public Gardens. The Levin and District Beautifying Society is also interested in this section, and it is the intention that the gound will eventually be planted out in shrubs and trees. A sum of £100 wa's allowed for this project from the proceeds of a queen carriival held some yedrs ago. The section is admirably situated .and should make a creditable extension to the Munkipal gardens.
