TEACHERS' INSTITUTE

MONTHLY MEETING OF LEVIN BRANCH The monthly meeting of th'e Horo whenua branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute was held at the Levin School last Thursday, when the presidtnc, Mrs. Rough, presided. over an artendan.ce of 32 members. Afrer partaki'ng of afternoon. tea the proceedrngs opened with the minuies of the previous meeting. A reply was received from the N.Z.E.l. ' regarding infant readers, stating that strong representartons- were being made to the department, to expedite the printlng and distribution of these so necessary books. , Mr. Mayman then reported on the meeting of tlie commirtee of branches, under the following headings: Approaching board^officers directly, the preponderance of Maoris in. certain schools, 'the advertising of special positions and the late distribution of Education Gazette, School Journals and answer books for the New Arithemetic. Mr. Mayman was accorded thanks for his excellent report. , v Discussion on the remits for the annual meeting resulted in various remits being strongly opposed, dspecially the one dealing with the raising of the annual subscription. It .was uiianimously decided that the branch delegate "adopt all constitutional means to ensure that a refferen.dum of all institute members be taken before any increase becomes operative." While agreeing with the principle that suitable office space was essential for the smooth working of the headquarters of . the institute, members were definitely opposed to the remit regarding the allocation of institute funds to a special building fund. The- compulsory membership remit led to a good deal of discussion, and it was decided to bppose it.' The equal pay for equal v/ork remit was productive of no new daita, except that the Education and Public Service report on the same question in England was not in favour of this proposition, because of various economic reasons. The president, who is the delegate to the annual meeting " "n Auckland, was given a free hand to. support or oppose the other remits according to the evidence that would be produced for or against. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
