Elderly Woman Killed An 83-year-old woman received fatal injuries • when, she was knocked over by a car in Jackson Street, Petone, about 6.20 last night. She was: — Mrs. E. Ahern, Hutt Park Road, Gracefield, Lower Hutt. Her injuries included compound fractures of both legs, injuries 'to the. right hip, euts, abrasions and bruises to the face, concussion and severe shock. She was taken, to the Lower Hutt Hospital by the Wellington Free Ambulance and died about' 7.30 p.m.
Students from India Agricultural students from India who are now in New Zeaiand number 10, and two more are expected shortly. The men, whose average age is about 24, are taking courses, mainly in dairy science, at the agricultural colleges in this country. They have been drawn mostly from Indian universities an.d have had a few years' experience as instructors or inspectors with the Department of Agriculture in their own country. The Govemment of India is iponsoring this scheme, whereby the men learn the latest methods of " agriculture in its many branches, and then return to their own country to act as instructors. April Road Deaths Total 25 Twenty-five motoring fatalities occurred during April. This is the highest number recorded by the Transport Department sinoe March, 1940. Seven people were killed on the road durihg the Easter weekend and a /.further seven during the long weekend which included - Anzac Day. Of the 25 deaths- during the month 20 resulted from weekend acciients. Seventeen of the deaths' were due to accidents which occurred after . dark apd only oight from- daylight accidents. Ih :ommenting upon these figures the Commissioner of Transport, Mr. G. L. Laurenson, stressed igain the need for extra care 'after, iark. "Inability to see clearly is such a potent cause of traffic accilents," said the commissioner, 'that everyone using the road, vhether he be driver, .cyclist or oedestrian,* should be doubly iautious- after nightfall. The lazard due to darkness will con;inue to be serious during the lext few months, when shorter laylight hours may often be :oupled with adverse weather."
