NATIONAL CANDIDATE FOR AVON

CHRISTCHURCH, April 30. Dr. R. A. McDowell will be the National Party's eandidate in the Avon hy-eleetion. His was the only nomi nation received by the party and the chairman of the eleetorate eommittee, Mr. H. C. Langford, said tonigh; tliat the submission of Dr. McDowell ;s naine to headquarters for approval wa.s merely a formality because Dr. McDowell had been approved as a eandidate at the general election. Mr. Langford said the eleetorate eommittee would meet next Mondav nigiit to plan the campaign, one of the dithcnlties of whicli was t?he small number of suitable halls. He expected that several prominent Members of Parliament wonld take part in the campaign. The leader of the Opposition, Mr. Holland, would speak and it was likely that Mr. Holyoake, Mr. W. Sullivan and Professor Algie and pos sibly others would visit the eleetorate.
