fortnightly meeting of council The fortnightly meeti'ng of the Shannon. Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, the Mayor (Mr. R. E. Dow'nes) and Crs R. R. Lind, J. A. Roach, H. Aitchison,, W. C. Higgie, J. Curran, L. Perry, C. G. Wishart and H. L. Norris were in attendance. The borough foreman (Mr. F. Haley) was also present. The Mayor, Cr. Lind and tne town clerk (Mr. J. T. Bovis) -were appointed to represent the council at a meeting of local bodies for the purpose of considering the question of the appointment of a combined building and sa'mtary inspector for the district. Further enquiries regarding the purchase of water pipes from the War Assets Realisation Board were left i'n the hands of the chairman of the works committee (Cr. Lind , with power to act on behalf of the council. . A communication was received from the secretary of the Municipal Associatio'n, advising that the Government wquld promote the necessary legisl'ation during the next session of Parliament for the purpose of validating subscriptions by members of the Mu'nicipal Association to the fund entitled "Tribute to London." On the motion of Cr. Roach, it was agreed that the sum of £3 be paid to this fund. Cr. Lind reported on the meeting held recently with members of the Main Highways Board, when the question of financial assistance towards the sealing of Grey Street and footpath formation m the same area was placed before the board. Cr. Lind stated that when the council was ready to carry out the work the board would be willing to favourably consider the council's request. The town clerk reported on the details necessary for the purchase by the council of a section m Plimmer Terrace, and read a copy of an advertisement which appeared in the district newspaper. . On the motion of Cr. Higgie, a building permit for a woolshed was granted to Mr. S. J. RichardS°C*r. Perry reported that the building committee had inspected two cases of buildings being commenced without permits, in both cases sheds, one in Vance Street and the other in Grey Street. Cr. Perry stated that both parties had been advised before proceeding further with the work to obtain the approval of the district Building Controller. Reporting further, Cr. Perry said that the Cenotaph and South "African War Memorial had been cleaned, and he expressed thanks to Mr. E. Gunning and Mr. Rasmussen for their assistance._ On the motion of Cr. Lind it was agreed that increased water supply charges be made on six connections outside the - borough. It was also decided to make a minimum charge of £3 per annum for each new application for water' supply outside the borough dealt with by the council. Cr. Roach reported on the present domain improvements and that the cess pit required attenf i nn Thp lat.t.p.r matter was
referred to the borough foreman to report. Cr. Aitchison reported that improvements had been carried out to the cemetery grounds. When matters _ of general importance were being discussed it was decided to ask the Health Inspector to carry out an inspection of the rubbish dump. Accounts passed for payment totalling £482 18s 9d terminated the business of the council.
