The higher rates have been given application as from March 25. Licencees of private hospitals in Auckland explained that the kew award for domestic staffs would be introduced in July or August. Shorter working hours with the consequent increase in the payment of overtime, were' expeeted and it was understood these provisions would be baek-dated to December 31. Under these circumstauces private hospitals, already harrassed by staffing difiiculties, would be presented with a large added fmahcial liability. It was stated the extra expense had been recognised by the Health Department and to meet the" oiitlay involved in backdating the new award, the £1 Is increase- in the weekly fees had been approved as from March 25. There are no standard fees for private hospitals although each scale requires the approval of the Health Department. They vary according to the class of accommodation and treatment that is offered. From these charges iiatients can deduct £3 3s which is contributed weekly from the Social Security fund.
