RUGBY AT OTAKI

Two rugby football matehes . were played On." the Otaki Domain on . Saturday under ideal conditiohs, the day being gloriously fine and the ground in good ordeir. ' The match. College Old Boysr-Otaki , ' fou'rths ended in favo.ur of the " former by 23 poi'hts to nil. College were much heavier than their opponents, showed the results of solid training and acquitted themselves 1 well, especially in the loose. Otaki, although playing an uphill game from the start, stuck to their task in a determined manner, and the way in which these ' young players performed did them ! credit, /although outclassed on the line and in scrummage work. College soon went into the lead ; and Giles opened with a nice try, . which Turner failed to convert. Ten minutes' play had passed. Murray and Judd then scored two good tri.es, which remained unconverted, while Taylor and McMinn added well-deserved tries by . quick movements, one of which Turner canverted. Snowden (Otaki) and Turner (College) both had unsuccessful shots at goal from free kicks, out were unsuccessful. Walker then addec a try for College, and then came a good try .by ' "Salmons. These were unconverted.' 1 The score was thus* carried to - 23 points to nil. Mr. P. S. Kuiti was referee. The Junior Game Although the score • in the Paraparaumu-Otaki junior game was one-sided, ' the match was interesting. ' The visitors had the advantage in both weight and height, and * showed sound knowledge of the game. The forwards worked i'h unison, while the backs combined splendidly. Their passing rushes were the means of several scores, and on occasions players showed a clean pair of heels to the Otaki lads. Some of the Paraparaumu players were clever at their passing rushes, and were allowed to get well under way before an attempt was made to stop them. Cuif proved the best of a fast set of backs, and he repeatedly broke away,. thanks to the firie passifig of his -• team mates. After seven minutes' play Beasley scored the first try, which Cuif failed to convert. Then Howell weht over near the pcst, but agaih the- kick at goal failed. Clunie then scordd and, lika the others, it was ' well deserved During the sp'ell Paraparaumu missed several chances, many - force-downs by : Otaki just preventing scores./; In the second speir Cuff opened with a fihe try, his strong running standing-' him" in/> good stead. A conversioh -resulted, carrying the score to 14 to nil. Clunie then scored a good try, but the kick at goal failed. Despite Otaki's hard aiforts to scdre 'they failed, but the second spelli ■ was largely in their favour. While Otaki worked hard, Paraparaumu proved good on th'e* defence. The score was 17nil when the whistle sounded. Mr. J;. Kuiti was referee. Both matches were watched with "interest by quite a large number of spectators, including many from Paraparaumu.
